About Wireless Fences for Cats

Although wireless fences are a popular product used by dog owners to keep their pets within the property, these devices can also be used by cat owners. Different types of wireless fences are used for cats including ones that sound off various tones in order to keep the cats contained in a particular area.
  1. Types

    • There are both indoor and outdoor versions of wireless fences available for cats. Outdoor versions allow your cats to roam your property without the fear of them running away or getting struck by a vehicle while outside. Indoor wireless cat fences set up boundaries in your home in order to keep cats away from off-limit areas, such as the stove, toilet, kitchen counter and tables.

    Brands

    • You can find numerous manufacturers of wireless fences for cats. PetSafe makes both an underground cat fence as well as an indoor version. The Invisible Fence brand is a well known manufacturer of dog wireless fences that also produces versions for cats.

    How It Works

    • A wireless fence for cats will rely on a transmitter to produce noise that only your cat can hear. You will place a receptive collar on the cat in order for them to hear the tones produced by the transmitter. A warning tone sounds first before a series of corrective tones are produced. You will need to adjust the level of intensity based on the age and health of your cat.

    Considerations

    • The indoor wireless fence will rely on you training your cat by putting the transmitter into different areas of the home that you don't want your cat to enter. However, the outdoor version will involve placing an underground wire around the perimeter of your yard. If the cat attempts to pass the perimeter, the tone will sound.

    Warning

    • Don't subject your cat to too high of an intensity setting during the training period. Also, the lowest intensity will usually be sufficient to control senior and sensitive cats.
