How to Stop a Cat Spraying /eliminating Inappropriately

Feline spraying is a cat's marking with urine on a vertical surface. Common surfaces include table and chair legs, doors and doorways, shelving units or bedposts. If your cat is eliminating, it will generally occur on a horizontal surface such as the carpet, bed or on top of a pillow. Spraying and eliminating have different causes and solutions. Be patient, it may take your cat some time to end its marking or eliminating. If it continues past your point of patience, consider calling a professional trainer in to assist you in training your feline.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the vet. If your cat is old or the behavior has started recently, take your cat to the veterinarian. The eliminating might be related to a health condition.

    • 2

Check both vertical and horizontal surfaces around your home for urine with a black light. Dried urine can be difficult to detect without a black light.

    • 3

Wipe wood and laminate surfaces with white vinegar to remove the scent. Then apply lemon Pledge, oil or extract. Follow this with a pheromone spray that will make the area smell inviting to your pet.

    • 4

If your pet has soiled any linens or pillows, wash them in hot water.

    • 5

Wash any carpet stains thoroughly. If the cat has eliminated recently, first blot the area with paper towels until all moisture is absorbed. Combine one part white vinegar to one part water and wet the soiled area. Apply a light dusting of baking soda over the spot and follow with ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Rub the mixture into the carpet and allow it to dry. Vacuum the area thoroughly.
