How to Teach Your Cat to Come

Cats certainly have minds of their own. Unlike dogs who mainly live their lives to make their owners happy, cats live to make themselves happy. Perhaps that is why it is so much easier to teach a dog tricks. Cats, on the other hand, will only learn and perform tricks if it brings them pleasure. Of course cats love and care for their handlers, but they simply care about themselves more. When you prepare yourself to train your cat how to come, make sure you allow ample time to make it happen. Each step will probably take about a week to master. If it takes less time, by all means, move on. Just prepare yourself for 5 weeks worth of cat training when you train your cat to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Cuddle with your cat on your lap. While you stroke her back (or wherever she likes to be stroked), say her name over and over in a calming voice. Do this each time you sit down with her, or at least 3 times a day. This teaches her to associate her name with pleasure.

    • 2

Stroke your cat while on your lap again. This time, wait until she makes eye contact with you to say her name. This teaches her to associate eye contact with her name.

    • 3

Sit down again with your cat on your lap. Stroke her, as before. This time, gently say his name. If he turns his head to look at you, give him a treat. Continue doing this every 4 minutes or so during your cuddle session.

    • 4

Place yourself in the same room as your cat. This time he will not be on your lap, but only a few feet away. Say his name. If he looks at you, tell him what a good boy he is. If he comes to you, give him a cat treat.

    • 5

Move yourself into a different room from your cat. Loud enough so that she can hear you, but not too forcefully, call her name. If she comes, praise her, pet her, and give her a treat.
