Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you need a cat door to train your cat to go inside and out. There are numerous ones available on the market today to fit into all kinds of spots. You can find cat doors to use in walls, sliding patio doors and even windows. It is not required to train you cat, but the cat door is convenient. If this sounds like something you would like, install one.

Show your cat the door (or window) you want them to use to go inside and out. Make sure they are calm and there are no distractions.

    • 3

Open the door (or window). This may be enough to get your cat's curiosity aroused to venture out. If it is not, see Step 4.

    • 4

Coax them to go outside by either using treats given to them, once they go outside--or by using a cat toy. You can let them sniff the cat treat, and then slowly pull it through the opening. You can use a string in place of the cat toy also. All you have to do is slowly pull the object out through the door with your cat following behind. It may take several attempts to accomplish this. Be patient or your cat will become stressed.

Show them the way back inside. It is of the highest importance to make sure your cat is trained to go back inside, once they understand how to go out. Use the same technique described in Step 4 to get your cat back inside.
