How to Get a Cat to Stop Hissing

If your cat hisses at everyone that comes close to him, you will find that people do not like him very much. Hissing is usually a sign of the cat being afraid, but people tend to mistake it as a sign of aggression. There are some things you can do to get the hissing to stop.

Instructions

    • 1

Try to find out why the cat is hissing. Are the other cats bothering her? Could she be sick or in pain? Or is it, like most cats, because she is fearful of people or situations?

    • 2

Use desensitization to try to get the hissing to stop. Approach the cat slowly until the hissing starts. When the cat starts to hiss, back off. Try to get closer each time before the hissing begins.

    • 3

Talk gently to the cat, earn his trust and give him time for his fear of you to go away. Give him space and come back later to try to pet him again. Do not pet him for too long before giving him his space again.

    • 4

Tell visitors not to make eye contact with the cat or to stare at her when they first come into the house. It is best if they ignore the cat and let her come to them when she is ready.

    • 5

Hiss back. Humans can hiss too. Curl back your lips, expose your teeth and blow air out through your teeth. Your cat is used to you acting like a human, a sudden switch to cat language will sometimes get his attention.
