How to Handle Feline Separation Anxiety

Although you may be more familiar with canine separation anxiety, cats can also experience this problem. Cats can be very social animals and they can experience anxiety when they are separated from their owners. Many of the signs are similar to those found in dogs including inappropriate behavior when left alone and vocalizations.

Instructions

    • 1

Have your cat checked out by your vet to make sure that underlying conditions aren't leading to the inappropriate behaviors. Urinating outside the box can be caused by illnesses like urinary tract infections, for example. By ruling out any medical reasons, you'll be able to focus on the anxiety as the cause of the behaviors.

Make your home and the time spent alone more stimulating for the cat. Put a perch by a window with a bird feeder outside, leave the radio on or try cat videos that include birds and other small creatures. Various toys can also help your cat have something to do while you're gone, making her feel less lonely.

    • 3

Keep departures and arrivals low key. You may want to switch up the routine you do before leaving the house, and keep from ignoring attempts by your cat to get your attention for a few minutes when you return. Pet your cat when she has returned to a calm state, rewarding this rather than anxiety.

Use treat dispensers to entice your cat through the day. You can place small treats within some toys, buy dispensers that release treats at certain times or hide treats through your home before you leave. The extra stimuli will keep your cat busy trying to get at the treats.

    • 5

Consider adding another cat to your household. Some cats prefer to be the only cat in the household, but others will welcome the company of another cat. You'll need to assess your cat and situation to know whether this will be a possible solution for you.

Talk to your vet about anti-anxiety medications that you can give to your cat to help him feel less upset. Both medications and natural remedies exist that might help your cat.
