How to Keep Your Cat From Scratching a Leather Couch

After paying thousands of dollars for a new leather couch, there's nothing worse than walking into the room one day to find deep scratches marring the exterior of your prized piece of furniture. Cats who love to scratch can be a major liability in homes. Some people feel they have to choose between having nice furniture and keeping a cat in the house. Discourage your cat from using your leather couch as a scratching post.

Instructions

    • 1

Offer your cat alternatives to your couch, such as a scratching post. Note what types of upholstery your cat likes to scratch, and select the right scratching post to suit its needs. Provide one scratching post for each cat in the house, plus an additional one.

    • 2

Place the scratching post in a place your cat frequents; scratching serves as a way of marking the cat's territory.

    • 3

Put double-sided tape on areas of the sofa where the cat likes to scratch, the tape will deter the cat from scratching there. Sprinkle cinnamon on the furniture, which may repel your cat. Besides having a strong taste, the powdery substance also lingers in the air. Cats find it irritating to breathe and will probably go elsewhere.

    • 4

Scold the cat with a hand-clap or hissing noise if it tries to use the couch for scratching. Praise the cat when it uses the scratching post and give it a treat.

Trim the cat's claws with nail clippers if you're still having trouble with a cat scratching your leather couch. Press the pad of the paw to extend the claws and clip the sharp end, being careful not to clip beyond the sharp end.
