Instructions
Purchase an aluminum pan at any grocery store. Minimum size should be 12-by-12 inches to allow your cat plenty of room to move around. A common baking pan is perfect for this use.
Pour at least 2 inches of cat litter into the aluminum pan. Clay litter is the best way to start out, as it is a natural mimic to dirt and the cat will instinctively want to dig and cover its droppings. Once the cat is trained, you can move onto other kinds of litter.
Place the pan on a spread out newspaper to catch any of the mess that might spill from the pan as the cat digs, or that might drop from the cat or its paws as it is entering or exiting the pan after eliminating its waste. The newspaper will make cleanup easier.
Enclose the cat with the prepared pan and litter. This can be as simple as placing the cat in a small bathroom or utility room with the pan, or even placing the cat in a large pet carrier with the pan. Be sure to include food and water and a soft, comfortable place for the cat to rest. The idea is to provide the cat with only one acceptable area to use the bathroom -- the aluminum pan.
Check the pan regularly to see if the cat has used it. When you find waste, praise the cat and allow it out of its confinement. Reward it with pets and treats. Clean the pan and place the cat back into confinement after a respite. Once the cat has used the pan effectively for a couple of days, transfer the pan to the place you intend to put the litter box and make sure the cat knows where it is. Make sure the cat is using the pan without being confined before you replace the pan with a litter box.
