The Mau is a domestic cat breed originating from Egypt. While the Mau was not the only cat held in high regard by the Egyptians, it is believed to be the closest living descendant of the ancient Egyptian cat.
Here's why they were so special:
* Associated with the goddess Bastet: Bastet, the goddess of protection, fertility, and motherhood, was often depicted with a cat's head.
* Symbol of good luck: Cats were seen as guardians of the home and protectors from evil spirits.
* Sacred animals: Cats were mummified and buried with great care.
While the Mau is the breed most likely associated with the ancient Egyptians, there's no way to know for sure what breeds were kept as sacred animals.
