Information on Maine Coons

The Maine Coon is one of the most widely mythologized breed of cats. Rumors abound of their enormous size or their uncanny mousing ability, but in fact Maine Coons are gentle, if rather large, companions.
  1. History

    • The Maine Coon is an American breed of cat originating in Maine, where they were prized for their mousing abilities. Developing specific traits over the years to survive in the harsh Maine climate, today the breed is highly-prized for its beauty and gentle nature.

    Characteristics

    • Maine Coon cats have thick, glossy, water-proof coats that tend to be longer at the ruff, stomach, upper leg and tail than other breeds. It is because of these two- to three-inch thick coats that the typically nine to 18 pound cats are often mistakenly believed to be much larger. Maine Coon cats come in a variety of colors, but are typically brown tabby with golden or green eyes.

    Personality

    • Maine Coons are gentle, highly-adaptable, and good-natured cats. Highly people-oriented, Maine Coons are active rather than lap cats. Neither are Maine Coons vocal; when they do speak, it is with a chirping trill distinctive only to the breed.

    Medical Problems

    • While genetic problems tend to affect a minority of cats, Maine Coons can inherit several medical conditions. Hip dysplasia can cause lameness, while cardiomyopathy can produce anything from heart murmur to severe heart problems.
