Hairless-Cat Owner Gifts

Hairless cats like the Sphynx have inspired a devoted following of cat lovers since the early 1800s (See References 1). Notable for its wrinkly, bald skin, large eyes and ears and unique personality, the Sphynx is a rare breed, and one that requires a certain amount of extra care from its owners. Still, the relationship between a hairless cat and its owner is a loving, rewarding one, and giving a Sphynx owner a gift that both he and his feline friend can enjoy is a way of showing that you understand their special relationship.
  1. Bathing Supplies

    • Though most other cat breeds are capable of cleaning themselves, the Sphynx must be bathed on a regular basis. Without fur, the cat's natural oils can collect on her skin, as can dust and dander. Help out your hairless-cat-loving friend by giving some supplies for bath time. Specially formulated soaps and shampoos may be the most practical gift, but other indulgences may be appreciated as well. A soft, plush towel, for example, can complement the other gifts. Consider a custom-made towel with an image of a hairless cat on it. Tiny bathrobes designed for pets may also come in handy, as a hairless cat must be dried completely after a bath to avoid skin irritation (See Reference 2).

    Clothing

    • Hairless cats lack the natural insulation of a fur coat, so giving the gift of something warm and snuggly may be particularly helpful to a hairless-cat owner. This may be something as simple as a cozy blanket that the kitty can curl up under, as Sphynx cats instinctively seek out warmth. A more specialized gift, however, may be something made with hairless cats in mind, like clothing. Miniature sweaters, jackets and other articles of cold-weather clothing are particularly useful for hairless cats. Their curious, inquisitive nature makes them appreciate time spent outside in the garden or on car rides, and giving them clothing that protects them from the elements can make this possible. Similarly, sunscreen can also be useful for protecting a Sphynx from the sun's harsh rays (See References 1, 3).

    Toys

    • Though some cats may become lethargic with domestication, the Spyhnx is not one of them. This breed is known for its big personality, curiosity and sense of fun. Unlike the gamble you take with other breeds, then, you can be assured that toys and play equipment will almost never go unappreciated in a hairless-cat household. Toys that bounce and jingle can keep a cat occupied for hours, while elaborate cat jungle gyms can provide a place for exploration and climbing. When shopping for a jungle gym, consider the cat owner---he may not have room in his home for larger play areas (See References 1, 2).
