Information on the Minx Cat

The idea that there is a breed of cat called the Minx is mistaken. The myth may have started because of confusion over the name of the Manx breed, or because the name Minx has been given colloquially to certain cat hybrids.
  1. A Myth

    • MessyBeast.com, a cat breed name listing created independently of any registries, lists the Minx as a non-existent breed of cat.

    The Manx

    • The Manx is a recognized cat breed of the Cat Fanciers' Association. Because of a genetic mutation, these cats, which originated on the Isle of Man, are tailless.

    Sphynx Hybrid

    • A Minx or Mynx is sometimes used colloquially to describe a first-generation cross of a Manx and a Sphynx (also a recognized breed), which is a hairless cat.

    Bobcat Hybrid

    • Minx may also be used to refer to the hybrid of a Manx cat and a wild bobcat. Wild bobcats, about twice the size of a housecat, are the smallest of the Lynx genus.

    Dwarf Manx

    • The term Minx has sometime been applied to miniature Manx cats, which are dwarf and tailless. These are not considered a separate breed, however.
