Roy Galusha, a cat breeder, created the Skookum breed of cats in the 1990s. The Skookum name is Native American and means mighty, powerful, or great. The name also signifies good spirits and health.

Skookums are classified as a small to medium cat breed. Males weigh between 5 to 7lbs and females weigh 3 to 5lbs.

Skookums are very affectionate to people. Skookums are curious, outgoing, confident and self-assured. Skookums have a tendency to hide things in secret places and are quite playful.

A Skookum has short legs and a curly coat. Hair can be short or long. Tail is medium in length with curly hair. Coats come in all colors and patterns. Skookums can run and jump as far and as fast as other normal size cats.

Skookum cats are registered with The International Cat Association and the Dwarf Cat Association, as an experimental breed. Skookum cats are listed as a new breed by Catz Incorporated, the New Zealand National Registry for Cats.
