Growth
-
While they start out small, Maine Coon kittens turn into one of the larger cats kept as pets. These cats usually weigh 8 to 18 pounds when mature and may be as long as 40 inches. While the Maine Coon kitten will grow up to be large, their friendly disposition more than makes up for their rather large size.
Considerations
-
A Maine Coon kitten should not be less than 10 to 12 weeks old at adoption. These kittens must stay with their mother to get all of the nutrients that they need. Formula and kitten food cannot supply the kitten with all of the nutrients he or she needs to grow up and be a healthy adult cat. Taking the kitten away from the mother will be detrimental for both the mother and the kitten.
Appearance
-
Maine Coon kittens (as well as adult cats) have a distinctive look. The body looks well balanced but is rectangular in shape. The head is longer than it is wide and the face features high cheekbones. The range of colors and patterns that the Maine Coon kitten may exhibit includes green, gold, blue, or green-gold eyes which are a defining characteristic second to their size.
Maturity
-
A Maine Coon kitten is slow to mature. Your kitten will not reach its full size or sexual maturity until he is three to four years old. The result is that he will act like a kitten for the first few years of life. These fun-loving, good-natured habits continue for some time, sometimes well into middle age.
Temperament
-
While they love their people and have been noted as having exceptionally deep bonds with their owners, Maine Coon kittens do not become dependent cats. They can be left alone in a home or an apartment during the workday without worry. The cats generally hang out in the areas where the people are, and kittens especially will want to investigate every activity going on in the house.
