Origins of the Breed
-
The Norwegian forest cat evolved in the forests of Scandinavia, the northern region of Europe that includes Denmark, Norway and Sweden. This breed was popular with the Vikings as both pets and travel companions. They kept rats and other vermin out of the villages and off of the ships. However, the Norwegian forest cat population slowly declined over the centuries. By the early 1900s they were extremely rare. In the 1930s, Europeans took notice and began efforts to save the breed. Their work was put on hold when World War II broke out but resumed after the conflict. In the 1970s, this cat was again thriving and was proclaimed the official cat of Norway by King Olaf.
Physical Characteristics
-
Norwegian forest cats, affectionately known as "Weegies," exhibit many traits that are a testament to their long history in Scandinavia. They are natural hunters and are strong, muscular and large. They also have large feet, with thick tufts of hair between their toes. The Weegie's fluffy coat is actually a double coat that is semi-waterproof. The under coat is wooly, which protects these cats from cold temperatures. The over coat shields against moisture. It is long in the winter to provide extra warmth and shorter in the summer. Weegies also have long, flowing tails and large, expressive eyes.
Personality and Temperament
-
Although the Norwegian forest cat traveled and lived with Vikings, they are more gentle and sociable than most other cat breeds. These cats are friendly, playful and noted for being extremely patient with children. Weegies get along well with other animals, too. They are also known for being loyal and loving. In addition, the Norwegian forest cat is calm, not prone to stress and adapts well to new situations and change. They are intelligent and interactive cats.
Owning a Norwegian Forest Cat
-
Norwegian forest cats are excellent pets for families with children or first-time cat owners. Because they are so friendly and patient, they are ideal for people who are busy and experience a lot of activity in the home. Weegies thrive on social interactions and will enjoy a fast-paced lifestyle. They also do not require much special care. The breed is not prone to health issues and, despite their fluffy double coat, are low maintenance when it comes to grooming. A weekly brushing is all that is necessary to keep the coat healthy. Norwegian forest cats are active and are natural climbers. Owners should provide areas or structures that allow this cat to explore high places and exercise the instinct to climb.
