Are There Any Breeds of Cats That Don't Shed?

Cats are delightful companions; they are independent, loyal and loving. But many people don't like dealing with issues like shedding. Many domestic cats (short or long haired) require daily brushing, and they seem to be constantly losing their fur. It is tedious, especially if you have a white cat that has left hairs all over your black clothing. You might be wondering if there are any breeds of cats that don't shed, and the answer is yes. There are several breeds of cats that are practically hairless and they all have loving demeanors.
  1. Sphynx Cat

    • The Sphynx cat is a rare breed and rather distinct looking. It appears to be hairless with wrinkled pinkish flesh. Most of them have very little hair; it is like a fine fuzz on its body, somewhat like peach fuzz. They do have fine, soft hair on their ears, mouths, nose and feet. This breed of cat doesn't shed, since it hardly has any hair to shed in the first place. The Sphynx cat has been praised for its lovable and loyal demeanor, which makes it an ideal companion for humans. They are also suitable pets for children.

    The Don Sphynx Cat

    • The Don Sphynx cat is very similar to the Sphynx cat. However, their gene pool is different. The Don Sphynx is a Russian breed and is also known as the Russian Hairless cat. The Don Sphynx is different from the Sphynx cat in one way; it has a more muscular physique and heavier bones. They also have larger ears. This particular species has distinct paws with long toes connected with webbing. Just like the Sphynx cat, the Don Sphynx appears hairless. They are very affectionate pets and highly intelligent.

    Peterbald Cats

    • The Peterbald cat is a combination of the hairless gene and the graceful physique of the Siamese or Oriental Shorthair cats. The result is a hairless cat that is elegant and graceful. It has big ears that appear bat-like. They can be completely bald, or they may have a light fuzz on their bodies (like suede). This breed of cat is highly social and enjoys having other pets in the house. They do not like to be left alone, so they are pleasant companions for homebodies.

    Cornish Rex

    • Most domestic cats have three layers of hair: the fuzzy outer layer, the middle layer of thick hair and then the soft, fine hair that comprises the undercoat. What makes the Cornish Rex cat different is that it only has one layer of hair, the short undercoat layer. Since this breed lacks the other layers of hair, it doesn't shed like a domestic cat or other breeds. Instead, the Cornish Rex's short, very soft hair is often compared to velvet and even to rabbit fur. The Cornish Rex has a small, egg-shaped head with very large ears. They are warm and affectionate pets.
