* DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus): This combination vaccine protects against four of the most common and serious diseases in dogs.
* Rabies: This vaccine protects against rabies, a deadly viral disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
Puppies should then receive a second DHPP vaccine at 10-12 weeks of age and a third DHPP vaccine at 14-16 weeks of age. Some puppies may also need to receive a fourth DHPP vaccine at 18-20 weeks of age, depending on the recommendations of their veterinarian.
In addition to these core vaccines, some puppies may also need to receive additional vaccines depending on their individual risk factors. These may include vaccines for:
* Bordetella bronchiseptica: This vaccine protects against kennel cough, a respiratory disease that is common in dogs that are housed in close quarters.
* Leptospirosis: This vaccine protects against leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
* Lyme disease: This vaccine protects against Lyme disease, a bacterial disease that is transmitted by ticks.
Talk to your veterinarian about which vaccines are right for your puppy and when they should be given.
