Are Baby Seahorses all Born Male?

That's a common misconception! Baby seahorses are not all born male.

While seahorses have a unique reproductive system, it's the males that become pregnant, not the females.

Here's how it works:

* Females transfer eggs to the male's pouch: The female seahorse deposits her eggs into a pouch on the male's belly.

* Male incubates the eggs: The male seahorse fertilizes the eggs and carries them in his pouch for about two weeks.

* Baby seahorses hatch from the pouch: When the eggs are ready, the male gives birth to tiny, fully formed seahorses.

So, baby seahorses are born male or female, just like any other species, but the father is the one who carries and gives birth to the young.
