What were west highland white terriers bred for?

West Highland White Terriers were originally bred for hunting vermin, specifically foxes, badgers, and otters, in the rugged Scottish Highlands.

Their small size and agility allowed them to easily navigate the terrain and chase after their prey in burrows and dens. Their thick white coat provided protection from the harsh weather conditions, and their tenacious spirit made them fearless hunters.

The breed was also used as farm dogs, guarding against vermin and providing companionship. Their friendly and playful personalities made them popular with families.
