How to Get a Copy of a Pedigree

Pure bred dogs will have a registered pedigree with the American Kennel Club or AKC. The pedigree is originally registered by the dog's breeder who registers each litter of puppies he breeds. He pays the fee for the AKC registration which is included in the price you pay for the puppy. A copy of this pedigree is necessary in order to prove your dog's bloodline, which enables you to breed your dog and enter dog shows.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your dog's breeder in order to ensure that they did in fact register your dog.

    • 2

Ask the breeder if they have a copy of the pedigree on file if they have completed the registration. If they do, they can send it to you.

    • 3

Ask the breeder for your dog's AKC registered name and identification number if they do not have a copy of the pedigree to send you.

    • 4

Call the registration information line at 919-233-9767. They are available from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. eastern time.

    • 5

Give the AKC representative your dog's registered name and identification number and ask them to send you a copy of the pedigree. They will be able to mail you a copy.
