Signs of a Chihuahua Whelping

When a dog gives birth, the process is known as whelping. Being able to realize when your Chihuahua is about to give birth is important so that you can help her with proper care and assistance. The gestation period for a dog is about two months, so begin looking for the signs at around that time.
  1. Temperature

    • If you believe that the time of your Chihuahua's whelping is drawing near, one clue is her temperature. A dog's temperature generally drops a degree or two lower than normal when it's time for her to give birth. Start taking your dog's temperature rectally twice a day. A normal dog temperature is between 99 and 101 degrees Fahrenheit. When the Chihuahua's temperature falls below 99 degrees, you can expect her to go into labor within about 12 hours.

    Eating and Drinking

    • Watch for your dog's eating and drinking patterns when you believe her whelping time is coming soon. She will likely drink much more than normal, so be sure to keep plenty of water available for her at all times. On the other hand, she may eat less. This is normal, so do not try to force her to eat. Some dogs don't eat at all the day before they give birth. If your Chihuahua doesn't show interest in her favorite foods, you know that she will soon give birth.

    Urinating and Defecating

    • Because your Chihuahua is likely drinking more water when her whelping process is near, she will also urinate more frequently. Many dogs also become constipated before they give birth. As this is a normal part of the whelping process, don't give her laxatives. Simply let nature take its course.

    Behavioral Changes

    • You can expect several behavioral changes in your Chihuahua before she has puppies. These can vary from dog to dog, so most dogs will display some of these symptoms, but not all of them. She can become restless, getting up and laying down repeatedly. She also might go often to her birthing area, scratching at the cloths, walking in circles and preparing the spot. While some dogs might like to be alone and go to a dark area during this time, others might follow you around wherever you go.
