How to Breed Rat Terriers

Rat terriers come into heat between the ages of 6 and 18 months with breed cycles typically occurring twice a year. Successful breeding requires selection of a pair that is healthy and reflects the standards for conformation and temperament, with personality traits that are in line with the breeder's expectations. According to the American Kennel Club, the rat terrier should be easily trained and be friendly with other dogs while not being overly aggressive or shy. When choosing a breeding partner, review the dog's medical history for any genetic weaknesses.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the breed pair is in good health with a check up by a veterinarian. Test for cardiac issues and canine brucellosis, a bacterial infection that causes infertility in dogs. Test for brucellosis once every six months prior to breeding. Test the pair's DNA for primary lens luxation through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. This is a genetic eye weakness affecting the breed.

    • 2

Rule out problems with elbows and hip dysplasia by screening through a veterinarian or the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals to ensure the breed pair does not pass on genetic issues such as Legg-Calve-Perthes disorder or patella luxation.

    • 3

Examine the female to ensure she is in heat. The vulva area should appear swollen and drip blood. Count the day spotting begins as Day 1 of the cycle. Heat cycles last 21 days. Record Day 1 of her cycle on a calendar to keep track of the fertile period. Females are ready to breed from Day 9 to day Day 14.

    • 4

Bring the male to the female on or around Day 9, during the height of the cycle. Let the mating begin. Prepare a space that is safe and quiet where the breed pair can be left alone to mate.

    • 5

Bring the male to the female every other day while the female is willing. The sperm is potent for 48 to 72 hours within the female. She will refuse the male's mount when her breed cycle is complete.
