How to Breed Puggle Dogs

Puggle dogs have become increasingly popular because of their small size and endearing personalities. The puggle dog is a cross breed between a beagle and a pug. A first generation puggle dog is bred from a pure beagle parent and a pure pug parent. Puppies will generally have a wrinkled face, a stocky body, the curled tail of a pug, and droopy ears of a beagle. The eyes will look more like beagle eyes and legs can be long or short. Choosing to breed dogs is a responsibility that should only be undertaken by dedicated and experienced dog owners.

Instructions

Request breeder references from a veterinarian or other trusted dog professional. Purchase a female pug or beagle from a reputable breeder. Follow Humane Society Guidelines when choosing a breeder. The pug or beagle should be registered with the AKA (American Kennel Association) as a pure breed.

Discuss with your veterinarian plans to breed the dog and the appropriate age and time for breeding. The minimum age to breed a female is two years. Monitor your dog's heat cycles which will occur for about three weeks every six months. Vaginal bleeding and swelling are signs the dog is in heat.

    • 3

Locate a breeder male. If your dog is a pug, find a beagle stud dog. If your dog is a beagle, find a pug stud dog. Obtain breeding records, AKA registration and all veterinary records from the owner before you pay a stud fee. Stud dogs are required to pass a number of health tests so make sure these records are also provided.

Know at what point in the female's cycle you can breed her. For the first seven to 10 days of the heat cycle bleeding is heavier and the female will not accept a male. During the second seven- to 10-day segment, her vulva will swell and she will be willing to accept a male. Breed her with the male three times for the best chance of her getting pregnant. When she does become pregnant it will take about 63 days for the puppies to be born.

Set up a box for birthing, known as a whelping box, about two weeks before she is due and try to get her used to sleeping in the box. The mother dog will nurse the puppies in this box until they are about six weeks old.

    • 6

Watch for signs of labor. You will notice that the dog will circle a lot, lick herself and strain to have the puppies. If it appears the dog is having difficulty or there is a lot of time between puppies being born, take her to a veterinarian right away.

Start introducing soft puppy food when the puppies reach about three or four weeks old, but continue to let the mother nurse them. Gradually remove the mother from the pups for longer periods of time which will encourage her milk to dry up.
