How to Mate a French Bulldog

Mating French bulldogs can be a stressful project. While mating can result in a prized pup that may bring generous income, prepare to spend extra funds to ensure the health of the breeding dogs and for ancillary breeding expenses. It is important to have prior knowledge of your breed of bulldog and of mating canines before deciding to breed, especially if you are a novice owner. This will keep the mating process from becoming a failure with unneeded expenses.

Obtain a male French bulldog or contact a male French bulldog owner. Make sure the male is available to breed. If you own a male bulldog and you want it to be publicly available for breeding, you can register the stud with the American Kennel Club or any local dog clubs. If you are unsure of the sexual vitality of your bulldog or his overall health, schedule a vet visit.

Talk to the owner of the female dog or prepare your female for mating. Usually mating comes with a hefty fee, so negotiate any payment options and be sure to draw up a contract in case any problems arise. The fee depends on a number of factors, such as age or color. Make sure the female you have acquired is also a French breed. Consider any additional fees you may incur, such as travel expenses and boarding fees. Be sure to include these fees in an invoice or other payment arrangement.

Check the health status of the female. Make sure the female is physically able to reproduce and healthy enough to have sex. Furthermore, a proper health report ensures your stud will not obtain any diseases from the female, especially brucellosis.

    • 4

Allow the female to meet the stud once she is in heat. Females are usually less affected by a change in environment than the stud, so let them meet in the stud's territory. Let the two mingle so they get used to one another. The better accustomed the stud is to the female, the higher the chance of relations.

Use a mounting or breeding bench, or mount the male on the female. Sometimes the male will mount himself if tall enough, but because of the bulldog's short stature, it is often difficult. Allow the stud to finish, something that may take around 30 minutes. Once the stud has released the female, separate the two. Monitor the female for pregnancy. She should begin to show within a couple of weeks of conception.
