Instructions
Select Pomeranians for breeding. Learn which qualities are the most highly sought after, and decide which of these traits you want to bring out in your new litter. Consult guidelines published periodically by the American Kennel Club (www.akc.org) and the American Pomeranian Club (www.americanpomeranianclub.org).
Ensure your Pomeranians have thick coats and full tails. These are the most important traits in parents so they produce desirable, healthy offspring. Make sure your female weighs about four pounds. Males can weigh between three and four pounds.
Monitor your female to deduce when she is in heat. This is when she is ready to breed and most likely to conceive healthy offspring. You can recognize a female Pomeranian in heat because she will display vaginal bleeding or a more prominent vulva. If you believe your female breeder is in heat but are unsure of how to recognize these signs, take her to a veterinarian for confirmation.
Document the first 12 days after the female goes into heat. If after 12 days she still displays these signs of fertility, she is ready to be bred. To monitor her fertility, you may take her to a veterinarian who will test her fertility levels throughout this 12-day period.
Introduce the female to the male in a private pen to prevent distractions. Keep both of them on a leash to prevent conflict. The dogs will sniff and lick each other for about 30 minutes and then the male should mount the female. At this point, remove the leashes. After the male has mounted the female, the breeding process is complete. This may take as little as a few seconds or a few minutes. You may reintroduce the male and female Pomeranians once a day for three days, which will increase the female's chances of conception.
