Dog Pregnancies & Symptoms Before Birth

It is important in the care of your dog to understand not only the symptoms of pregnancy but also the signs and symptoms of impending labor. Knowing when your pet is about to start labor will enable you to be there to offer help if needed.

  1. Pregnancy Symptoms

    • Symptoms of pregnancy in dogs are not easy to spot. The most common signs are the enlargement of the nipples and the thickening of the abdomen.

    Milk

    • Near the end of pregnancy, the dog might experience a milky discharge from the nipples.

    Discharge

    • A clear vaginal discharge might be seen in a dog who is nearing labor.

    Restlessness

    • A dog who is in the early stages of labor might show signs of being very restless. She may not be able to get comfortable and will lie down, only to get up again a few minutes later.

    Puppy Movement

    • When a dog is near the end of her pregnancy, you can often feel the outline of the puppies in her stomach. You may also at times be able to feel the thumping of tiny heartbeats.
