Keep the mother calm. When the mother dog is going into labor, the first thing she is going to need from you is to help her stay calm. Just talking to her and petting her can be a great help. She needs to know that she is okay and that you are there for her.

Help the mother clean her puppies. If your dog is having a small litter, she will probably be able to clean them herself. With bigger litters, dogs get tired and need help. Use scissors to open the membrane that the puppies are in and a towel to rub them clean. Make sure the puppy is breathing well by cleaning out his mouth and rubbing vigorously.

Cut the umbilical cords. Some mother dogs will do this on their own, but others will not. If the mother need assistance, use your scissors to cut each cord and tie it off. A single knot is fine.

Help with the delivery. If the mom seems to have stopped delivering pups, but you know there are more pups there, call the vet. Your vet may have you bring her in after a certain period of time, or tell you how to massage her to help her deliver the remaining puppies.
