First Signs of Pregnancy in a Dog

A dog may give birth anywhere from 54 to 72 days after conception. The average gestation period is about 60 to 65 days. Dogs should be fed a high-calorie food during pregnancy. Because some extra care and attention may be needed during the pregnancy, it is important to recognize a pregnancy as soon as possible.
  1. Appetite Decrease

    • While not all dogs experience this pregnancy symptom, many dogs will eat less than usual and may feel sick in the stomach at the beginning of a pregnancy.

    Lethargy

    • When a dog becomes pregnant, changes in her hormone levels may make her tired and lethargic.

    Nipple Growth

    • Pregnant dogs develop breast tissue and longer nipples at the onset of pregnancy.

    Behavior Changes

    • Some pregnant dogs will want more attention from their owners and be more loving. Other dogs, however, may become less affectionate and want some space.

    Ask the Vet

    • Veterinarians can detect pregnancy early on using an ultrasound machine.
