Puppy Time
Decide on the size. Your female dog will need enough room to stretch out and nurse but you don't want it to be drafty.
Construct your box out of washable material. Vinyl or painted plywood is a good option. There is even plastic-coated plywood available. Make the front panel lower so that the mother can get out but not low enough for the puppies to escape.
Install a railing or a narrow shelf to keep the mother from squashing the puppies against the sides. Create a 4-inch wide shelf out of plywood that is 5 inches off the bottom. If installing a railing, follow the same measurements. Four inches away from the wall and 5 inches from the bottom.
Bed the box. Newspaper is an inexpensive bedding choice and is also a good insulator. Old sheets and towels work well, also.
Some good base measurements are:
• Small dogs: 21 to 34 inches by 21 to 34 inches by 15 inches
• Medium dogs: 28 to 34 inches by 28 to 34 inches by 19 to 20 inches
• Large dogs: 42 to 45 inches by 34 to 40 inches by 22 to 23 inches
• Extra large dogs: 48 to 58 inches by 40 to 48 inches by 24 inches
