Instructions
Schedule an examination with your veterinarian to look for defects such as epilepsy, hypothyroidism and color dilute alopecia. Make sure your dog is in good breeding health and is old enough to breed. While Italian greyhounds experience their first estrus cycles as early as 6-months-old, they are not yet mentally ready to have puppies.
Select a stud based on conformation and personality. Pay the stud fee and discuss with the owner how to transport the semen. Most Italian Greyhounds are bred via artificial insemination because of the distance between dog owners and the risk of injury during mating.
Learn your dog's breeding schedule. Female Italian greyhounds experience estrus cycles twice per year. Coordinate the insemination with the stud owner and your veterinarian.
Maintain your dog's comfort and health during gestation, which lasts 56 to 72 days after fertilization.
How to Breed Italian Greyhounds
Italian greyhounds are small canines, ranging from 13 to 15 inches tall and weighing less than 20 pounds. Considered a "toy" dog breed, litters often include no more than five puppies. Italian greyhounds are physically and socially mature after their third year, and are ready to breed as long as they don't have genetic problems like progressive retinal atrophy, slipped stifle or epilepsy.
