How to Tie a Pug

Tying a pug is a process that happens naturally during breeding. When pugs and other dogs mate, after the male's ejaculation, the dog's penis naturally swells and the dogs will remain in position together for some period between 2 and 30 minutes. When this occurs, the chances for pregnancy are much higher than when tying does not occur. There are several things you can do to help the dogs have a successful mating session, which will result in tying.

Instructions

    • 1

Breed the dogs when the male is at least 18 months of age and no more than five years of age, recommends the American Kennel Club (AKC). Also according to AKC, the female should be between seven months and five years of age.

Provide a comfortable location for the dogs to mate. Make sure the male is familiar with the location. A small, dimly lit kennel or dog run is an ideal location for breeding pugs. The dogs should have enough room to move around, but not enough room that they can run away from each other. Typically, females are better able to handle new environments than the males, according to AKC, and they are often taken to the stud to mate.

Wait until the female is ovulating before mating the pugs. Have a veterinarian check the female's hormone levels to determine the ideal mating time.

    • 4

Place the two dogs together in the pen so they can mate. Allow the dogs to mate at their own pace. If tying does occur, speak to the dog's calmly so that they do not try to break apart in panic, which can injure the male. Mate the dogs every two or three days for a total of three times as this provides the highest chance of the female's becoming pregnant, states the AKC.

Allow the dogs to stay in the tied position for as long as necessary. Usually the penis returns to normal size within 30 minutes and the dogs can separate.
