How to Breed a Male Pomeranian

A Pomeranian is a small dog that is attractive to pet owners due to its affectionate nature and cute looks. If you decide you want to breed your male Pomeranian with a female, there are a lot of things to think carefully about. In order to breed these dogs effectively and ethically, you must educate yourself on the facts of breeding, and you must be prepared for the potential financial and emotional burden that breeding dogs can bring.

Talk to your vet about what could go wrong with the breeding. If you are looking after the female as well as the male, there could be complications with the pregnancy that require vet attention. A cesarian could be required. Vet visits such as these can end up being very expensive. Make sure you are comfortable with the financial implications.

Breed purebred with purebred. Assuming that your male Pomeranian is a purebred, ensure that the female is also a purebred. There is demand for designer dogs bred by mating particularly small dogs or different breeds of dogs. This may seem appealing, but is unethical as this can weaken the bloodline of the dogs and may produce weak dogs with genetic defects. This is highly unethical, so stick to purebreds.

Visit your vet and have medical checkups for both dogs. Some seemingly healthy purebreds should not be bred due to hereditary abnormalities or diseases that could be passed down to the puppies. Both dogs should be healthy.

    • 4

Check the weight of both dogs. The male should never weigh more than 1.36 kilograms or 3 pounds more than the female. It is fine for the female to weigh more than the male. Never breed two Pomeranians who are unnaturally small to get tiny puppies. This will only produce puppies with serious health problems and is unethical.

    • 5

Know the age of your dog. Male Pomeranians should be at least 2 years old before they are allowed to breed. Females should be between 2 and 7 years old.

    • 6

Understand the heat cycle of the female. Male dogs will mate with any female at any time, for the most part. However, a female dog has to display the signs of coming into heat, and even then she may not be interested in mating at first. Female dogs can be choosy. Introduce the male to the female 12 days after she begins her heat cycle. At this time, the female is more likely to become pregnant. You can help the process by helping the female relax. Rub her tummy and stay next to her until you can see that she is relaxed and happy. Allow the male to attempt to mount her after this point.

Encourage them to mate for three days, once a day. Keep them on separate leashes until you can see that they are going to mate, otherwise they could become aggressive and hurt each other.
