How to Mate Daschunds

Originally bred as field and underground hunters, dachshunds are known for their short legs and long bodies. These features are rarely needed to hunt out badgers anymore, but they still make the breed a distinctive looking, relatively low maintenance dog. They are a friendly breed that love to cuddle with people. They can also be very energetic, entertaining a whole room with their antics. If you own one of these fun purebred dogs, you might think about mating your dog to produce puppies for friends or for sale.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a stud dog carefully. Research the bloodlines available in your area and try to choose a stud dog that has several ancestors in common with your bitch. If you are breeding your dog to sell the puppies, the stud should have a winning show record or have other offspring that do.

    • 2

Select a stud that has strengths that offset your dog's weaknesses. Pay particular attention to the stud's temperament, make sure he is friendly.

    • 3

Make sure your dog is full-grown and ready for breeding.

    • 4

Address any health conditions of the bitch. Worm the dog before mating or within three weeks afterward. Take care of any skin conditions before mating.

    • 5

Make sure the bitch is neither too thin nor too fat.

    • 6

Plan to mate the dog about 6 ½ months after the start of her last cycle or season.

    • 7

Breed the female about 12 days after her first colored discharge.

    • 8

Don't plan to make money from breeding. You will have considerable expenses getting the bitch into breeding condition, sustaining her during pregnancy and caring for the puppies, so be sure you have the financial resources for the undertaking.
