It originated from the Portuguese explorer João Fernandes Lavrador who explored the region in the early 16th century. His surname, "Lavrador," means "farmer" in Portuguese.
The name "Labrador" was initially applied to the entire eastern coast of Canada, but eventually came to refer specifically to the peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
