Was the original yellow Labrador retriever a white retriever?

While yellow labs are a popular color variant, the original Labrador Retrievers were black. Yellow labs were introduced later through selective breeding, specifically to create a lighter-colored version of the breed.

There's no evidence suggesting white retrievers were involved in the development of the yellow Labrador.
