How to Care for a Yorkiepoo

The Yorkiepoo is a designer dog breed that is a combination of Yorkshire terrier and poodle. Yorkiepoos are small dogs that can weigh between 5 and 15 pounds, and have long curly or wiry hair. Their small size mandates certain care and breeding requirements that are different than those for medium-size and large dogs. If you are considering getting a Yorkiepoo or have to dog sit for someone else's Yorkiepoo, learn about the breed so that you can take good care of it.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk a Yorkiepoo on a daily or every other day basis. Use a dog harness instead of a collar, because the Yorkiepoo's small neck can become injured from a collar. Harnesses are safer for smaller breeds. While a Yorkiepoo is small enough to get exercise at home or in the yard, small breed dogs can easily put on weight if they are not exercised enough. In addition, the Yorkiepoo becomes hyper and possibly destructive when too much energy is built up.

    • 2

House train a Yorkiepoo. If you have a puppy, use puppy training pads to familiarize the Yorkiepoo with eliminating in one specific area of the house, until the puppy is ready to learn how to go outside. Since Yorkiepoos are so small, some owners may choose to continue using puppy training pads in the home even with adult Yorkiepoos.

    • 3

Brush the Yorkiepoo daily. The curly or wiry coat can easily become tangled if it is not brushed out regularly. A tangled coat can cause pads to form in places where the fur is a little longer, such as around the tail and behind the ears.

    • 4

Bathe the Yorkiepoo monthly or more frequently depending on how dirty the dog gets. It is not necessary to bathe a Yorkiepoo on a weekly basis because the shampooing will strip the natural oils of the dog's coat, making their skin and fur more dry. Always brush your Yorkiepoo after bathing.

    • 5

Look inside the Yorkiepoo's ears on a weekly basis. Examine the inner ear for dirt and oil build up or for signs of infection. Since the Yorkiepoo's ears are long and furry, it is not easy to see the inside of the ear unless you go out of your way to check. When you need to clean out the ears, use a cotton ball dampened with water and circle it around the ear gently.

Keep the Yorkiepoo's nails clipped and the fur groomed. Grooming not only keeps the look of the Yorkiepoo well maintained, but it helps to prevent the Yorkiepoo's long coat from getting as dirty.
