Traits & Characteristics of Goldendoodles

Goldendoodles are hybrid dogs. These dogs are a cross-breed of golden retrievers and poodles. Breeding hybrid dogs creates what is called a ̶0;designer dog̶1; that exhibits the best characteristics of each breed. Goldendoodles have been bred in the United States and Australia since the 1990s. Although they are not recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club, these dogs are popular and sought-after pets.
  1. Coat

    • Goldendoodles come in a variety of colors, but the most common are cream and gold. Other colors include chocolate, black and red coats. Some goldendoodles even have patchy coats made up primarily of white with brown or black spots. Occasionally, goldendoodles have a rare silver color inherited from the dog's poodle parent. Goldendoodles often have curly coats inherited from their poodle parent. These curly coats are hypoallergenic and have a lower tendency to shed. Generally, the curlier the dog's coat is, the less it will shed. Goldendoodle's hair usually grows about 4 to 6 inches long and does not require much grooming.

    Size

    • Goldendoodles typically come in two sizes: standard and miniature. When a golden retriever is bred with a standard-size poodle it produces a standard size goldendoodle. Miniature poodles bred with golden retrievers produce miniature goldendoodles. Standard-size goldendoodles are medium to large-size dogs. They are generally 20 to 29 inches tall and weigh between 45 and 90 pounds. Miniature goldendoodles are small to medium-sized dogs. They are generally 13 to 21 inches tall and weigh between 25 and 45 pounds.

    Skills

    • Goldendoodles learn quickly and are easy to train. These dogs are highly intelligent and will watch you closely for cues and signals, according to the book ̶0;Goldendoodles.̶1; They have a strong desire to please and pick up easily on what you want them to do. Due to their golden retriever genes, goldendoodles tend to be mouthy dogs. As young dogs and puppies, they have a tendency to chew and gnaw and must be trained not to do so. This mouthing trait makes them great at retrieving objects and playing games like catch.

    Personality

    • Goldendoodles are well-known for their happy disposition. Much like golden retrievers, goldendoodles are generally warm, affectionate and friendly. These dogs are well-suited for households with multiple dogs and make great family pets because of their mellow, gentle and easy-going personality. Since goldendoodles are so sociable, they need a lot of attention and require a moderate amount of playtime and exercise to prevent boredom. These dogs are generally nonaggressive, intuitive and obedient.
