Do Foxhounds Shed?

An affectionate breed with a distinguished history, foxhounds are known for their active natures and love of the outdoors. Before you decide to make a foxhound the newest member of your family, learn about this unique breed and its particular grooming needs. Whether, and how much, foxhounds shed is an important question to ask.
  1. American Foxhound

    • American foxhounds were originally bred for foxhunting in the United States by cross-breeding French and English hounds. American foxhounds have a large frame and average about 70 pounds when fully grown. American foxhound colorings include combinations of brown, black, tan and white. American foxhounds have tails that curve upward. They are pack animals and get along well with other dogs and children. They are agile, energetic and fast, requiring large areas for running and exercise. This breed requires a firm owner as its energy level often makes it difficult to train.

    English Foxhound

    • Originally from Britain, the English foxhound resulted from cross-breeding greyhounds, bulldogs and fox terriers. Bred for hunting, the English foxhound has tremendous stamina and can run for hours at a time. Slightly larger and slower than the American foxhound, English foxhounds can weigh up to 90 pounds. Their colorings are combinations of black, white and tan. They are good with children and people and get along well in packs. English foxhounds require extensive and persistent training.

    Coat

    • Foxhound fur is coarse, with that of the American foxhound being medium length and the English foxhound being shorter and denser. Both shed an average amount; neither requires any specialized grooming.

    Grooming

    • Grooming a foxhound is uncomplicated, but should be done consistently. Foxhounds require a firm-bristle brush for removing excess hair. Brushing should be done once a week. A dampened cloth should then be wiped over the fur. This reduces the amount of shedding and keeps the coat clean. In the case of the English foxhound, this also keeps it glossy. To avoid drying out their coats, bathing should be done only as necessary.
