Are Pitbull Terriers Aggressive?

Pit bull terriers aren't recommended as a pet for most owners because most owners don't understand how to properly train this species of dog. Pit bulls have natural aggressive tendencies towards other animals; with poor training that aggressiveness can be directed towards humans. These dogs are strong and powerful; owners must recognize signs of aggressiveness and what might cause pit bulls to attack.

    • The natural aggressive tendencies of pit bull terriers are towards other dogs and animals, that doesn't mean they can't be a threat to humans. Pit bulls must be raised properly by a firm, confident and calm pack leader. Poor training or cruelty towards this breed will lead to aggressive behavior towards humans. They are also highly protective of an owner and an owner's property, possibly leading to confrontation if strangers visit.

    Dog Aggressiveness

    • Most pit bulls are aggressive towards other dogs and because of their size can hurt other pets. They were bred to fight other dogs; because of that natural instinct they must be watched closely any time they're around other dogs. The majority of pit bulls are aggressive towards other dogs of the same sex no matter which species those dogs are. Others are aggressive towards all dogs no matter which sex they are.

    • According to the Dog Bite Law Center, pit bulls, which make up only 2 percent of the total dog population, make up 1/3 of all fatal dog attacks in the United States. Pit bulls can be dangerous to humans, however, if properly trained, they can be sociable and loving dogs. They need to be broken of bad habits such as jumping on people. Simple precautions should always be taken such as never leaving small children with a pit bull.

    Signs of Aggressiveness towards Other Dogs

    • As puppies, pit bull terriers will get along with other dogs fine. Most pit bulls start to become aggressive towards other dogs between the ages of 8 months and 2 years. This aggressiveness towards other dogs can happen gradually or quickly. Before attacking another dog, pit bulls often do not display normal warning signs such as growling, barking and posturing up. They may just alert and rise up on their toes before attacking, making it important for owners to know the warning signs of their dog being aggressive.
