What Do You Need for a Miniature Dachshund?

Miniature dachshunds are lively, energetic dogs which can make lovable pets. They are similar to regular dachshund dogs, except they are smaller in size. Miniature dachshunds require plenty of exercise, the right feeding, suitable housing and regular grooming. Knowing the requirements of your miniature dachshund dog will ensure that your pet is kept healthy and happy throughout its life.
  1. Feeding

    • Food is vital for muscle and bone development in your miniature dachshund. Your pet's diet should consist of a healthy variety of meats and cereal grains. It must be fed at regular feeding times and get used to a routine, and there must not be any sudden changes in diet as it can cause digestive problems. Miniature dachshund puppies need to be fed four times a day until they reach 3-months old; puppies from 3 to 6 months need three meals a day; and after 6 months they require two meals. When it reaches adulthood, at 1-year of age it needs less food and will only require one meal a day with a few dry biscuits in the morning and afternoon.

    Housing

    • As an owner of a miniature dachshund, you need to ensure that your miniature dachshund has suitable housing both indoors and outside. If it is mainly kept indoors, a dog crate large enough for movement can make an appropriate indoor doghouse. If it is mostly kept outdoors then a well-built, water-proof and insulated doghouse can be sufficient. Whether your dog has an indoor or an outdoor doghouse, it should be cleaned on a regular basis. Your pet miniature dachshund should also have a comfortable bed inside the house with enough room to move about and snuggle up in. This should be replaced as your dog grows and regularly cleaned and disinfected.

    Grooming

    • Depending on the variety of miniature dachshund, it will require different grooming. Wirehaired and longhaired varieties need lots of grooming, while the smooth variety only requires minimal grooming. Brushing and combing is a special bonding time between owner and pet, and most miniature dachshunds love the attention. When grooming, pay careful attention to the ears and make sure that they are clean and healthy.

    Exercise

    • Miniature dachshunds require daily exercise.

Miniature dachshunds are energetic pets and require daily exercise. This breed of dog is prone to spinal problems so without exercise its waistlines can thicken causing extra strain on their long spines. Allocate a walking time every day, or if your pet is confined throughout the day a fenced in outdoor run can be ideal. Your pet should be familiar with its leash and collar, and the collar must have a tag with name and address on in case your dog gets lost.
