How to Raise Miniature Dachshund Puppies

Dachshunds, or badger dogs, belong to the hound group of dogs and were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885. Dachshunds may be standard or miniature, the latter weighing less than 11 pounds. A miniature dachshund puppy is a great family companion, but it requires additional care during the first months of its life, because it needs frequent visits to the veterinarian and certain vaccines.

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule an appointment with a veterinarian and have your puppy checked for parasites and other diseases.

    • 2

Have your puppy vaccinated. The American Veterinary Medical Association lists the following core vaccines: the rabies, canine distemper, parvovirus and canine hepatitis shots. Non-core vaccines may be administered if your puppy is genetically predisposed to certain diseases.

    • 3

Feed your miniature dachshund puppy food that is rich in proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Adult dog food doesn't meet the requirements for a puppy that is in its growing phase. Feed the dog at the same times each day and take it outside after meals to urinate or defecate. Provide water bowls with fresh water at all times. Give your puppy treats during training to reward a successfully performed action.

    • 4

Exercise your dog for at least 30 minutes each day. Play with your pet or give it toys.

    • 5

Provide chew toys for your puppy. Puppies need to chew while they are teething so if you fail to give your puppy chew toys, it will chew on other items in your home.

    • 6

Groom your pet regularly with a comb and a slicker brush. Grooming needs depend on your miniature dachshund's type of hair, which may be smooth, wiry or long. Smooth-haired pets require less grooming. Talk to your veterinarian, should you find parasites or any abnormal signs on your dog's skin.

    • 7

Bathe your puppy once every two months. Use a mild shampoo. Don't bathe your pet too frequently, because its skin may become dry.

    • 8

Clean the miniature dachshund's ears using a cleaning solution and cotton swabs.

    • 9

      File the puppy's nails regularly.

    • 10

Brush your mini dachshund's teeth with a toothbrush and meat-flavored toothpaste. Regular brushing eliminates plaque and prevents tartar, and it also removes bad breath.
