What Are CKC Registered Poodles?

CKC, Continental Kennel Club, registers pedigree dogs and litters, meaning they are purebred and have a traceable record of descent. Poodles registered with CKC receive puppy papers certifying them as having come from a purebred litter. If you have a poodle registered with CKC, it is either a Miniature or Toy Poodle, as those are the only two CKC registers.
  1. Continental Kennel Club

    • Continental Kennel Club (ckcusa.com) was founded in 1991 with the intent of providing another option for canine registration and services. It claims a strong commitment is to its members, with an emphasis on timely service delivery. CKC boasts that this customer service model has led to a rapid increase in registrations with the organization over the years. CKC also claims a commitment to establishing national performance events, field trials and breed evaluation shows.

    Poodles

    • CKC registers two types of poodles: Miniature and Toy. Both breeds are classified as gun dogs. Miniature Poodles, the larger of the two breeds, are between 10 and 15 inches in height and 15 to 30 pounds in weight. Toy Poodles are less than 10 inches in height and weigh between 7 and 14 lbs. Breeders are attempting to "breed down" the Toy Poodle even smaller to create a Teacup Poodle.

    Appearance

    • Poodles, both Miniature and Toy, registered with the CKC have a specific appearance and do not differ on any characteristics. Miniature and Toy Poodles' heads are moderately rounded; their eyes are dark, oval and set apart; their ears are close to the head, at or below eye level; the nose is black; and the bite is scissor-style or level. The dogs' necks are strong and well proportioned; the topline is level; the chest is deep and moderately wide; and the body is square and muscular. The legs are straight and muscular; the feet are small and oval, with well-arched toes and thick firm pads; and the tail is docked and set on high. These poodles' movements are swift and very agile, with a flowing gait. Their temperament is high-spirited and very lovable.

    Registration Cost

    • At the time of publication, registering an entire litter with the CKC is free. (See Resources.) The registration comes with pre-printed puppy papers. You can complete the Kennel Registration Application if you have 10 or more dogs that need to be registered at the same time, excluding newly born litters, for which you should use the Litter Registration form. CKC also offers Standard Registration, whether or not the puppy's parents are CKC-certified, photo IDs, Certified Pedigrees for three, four or five generations, Breeder Quick Reference Sheets, Kennel Litter Reports and Microchip Kits.
