Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier Mix
-
The Morkie or Yorktese is a combination of two popular toy breeds -- the Maltese and the Yorkshire terrier. Both parent breeds have a similar face with bright eyes and a medium length muzzle as does the resulting mixed dog. The ears can be erect like a Yorkshire terrier or floppy like a Maltese. A full-sized Morkie weighs between three and seven pounds and can weigh as little as two pounds if the parents are of the miniature variety.
Coat
-
Both the Yorkshire terrier and Maltese have a practically shed-free coat that produces the low shed coat of the Morkie. The absence of shedding reduces dander and makes the dog a good choice for allergy sufferers. Like both parent dogs, the hair will continue to grow if it is not cut. Morkies require regular cuts, especially on the face and paws and daily brushing to prevent matting. Coat colors can be apricot or butterscotch, black and tan alone or with white or steel blue markings.
Temperament
-
The Morkie temperament combines characteristics from both breeds, which have many traits in common. Both parent breeds are energetic, happy and loyal. Morkies can be very talkative and protective, traits common in the Yorkshire terrier, that can turn the Morkie into a yappy dog if not trained correctly. Morkies like attention from humans or animal companions and do not like to be left alone. They are active, but do not need a lot of exercise; a walk around the block or a play session in a backyard will do.
Morkie Puppy
-
Morkie puppies should be socialized to people and other animals at a young age since they are prone to small dog syndrome and can become territorial and protective. Both parent breeds have a tendency toward tooth decay, so proper dental care is essential. Puppies should get used to having teeth cleanings with a tooth brush and eating dental cleaning bones. The Morkie is a good family dog and can get along well with other family pets and children.
