Sable Collies
-
Unlike some breeds such as the chow or smaller dog breeds, the collie -- whether smooth or rough -- has a temperament that is suited to families with small children. They are prized for their intelligence and sensitivity, and are known for being exceptionally loyal. Friendly and loving, the collie enjoys the company of humans and is exceptionally easy to housebreak and train. Collies are often found working in film and television due to their easygoing nature and often compete in obedience competitions.
Rough Coat
-
There are two types of collies: smooth and rough. A rough collie is the more common and has long flowing fur. This long coat takes quite a bit of care and is not recommended for families that have allergies. The undercoat of the rough collie sheds twice a year and must be combed out with regularity to prevent mats. Grooming is essential for a healthy collie and those who wish to own a rough coated collie must keep in mind the demands of their upkeep.
Smooth Coat
-
The smooth coated collie is often mistaken for other breeds, such as a whippet or a greyhound. A smooth coated collie is simply a collie with very short slick hair -- not unlike racing dogs. They have the same temperament and can be considered to have sable coloring as long as they have the trademark mixed brown and white coat. Like their rough-coated counterparts, these dogs are easily trained, very intelligent and bred for human companionship and working in the great outdoors as a herding animal.
Collie Colors
-
Along with the traditional sable coat, the collie comes in black and white and tan and white color combinations. These combinations are present in both the smooth and rough collie coat and do not reflect on the temperament or personality of the dog. Smooth collies have a very slick coat and do not require the care and maintenance of their rough coat counterparts. Daily combing is required of all rough coated Collies. All collies, regardless of color, need a lot of exercise and make excellent herding dogs.

What Is a Sable Collie?
Beautiful and loyal family dogs, collies come in various shapes and sizes. The most recognizable form of collie is the sable-coated rough-coated Collie. This is mostly due to the classic television series "Lassie," which featured a sable-coated rough Collie. Sable refers to the different-hued collie that has both brown and black hair growth on the same strand, giving it a multi-hued coat that stands out.
