What Is a Royal Poodle?

Although many poodle owners treat their dogs like royalty, the American Kennel Club does not have a registered breed by the name "Royal Poodle." The three sizes of poodles recognized by the American Kennel Club include toy, miniature and standard. Recently however, poodle breeding has introduced two additional sizes to buyers. The first is teacup size, which is smaller than a toy poodle. The second is royal, which is larger than a standard.

  1. History of the Poodle

    • Poodles originated in Germany and were initially water dogs. They made excellent hunting dogs because of their intelligence and fearlessness. Their closely clipped coats allowed them to easily swim through water as retrievers. Centuries ago, poodles were known for their ability to bond with humans and today it still stands out as one of their best characteristics.

    The Size of a Royal Poodle

    • Standard poodles are those whose measurements are over 15 inches from the highest point of their shoulders. Royals are larger than standards, generally measuring between 20 and 25 inches tall to the shoulders. Males weigh approximately 70 to 80 pounds. Females weigh slightly less than males and are usually a little shorter.

    Royal Poodle Characteristics

    • Poodles are non-shedding, which means they need regular grooming as their coats grow continuously. They are very intelligent and easy to train. They love being around humans and they enjoy other dogs as well. Poodles come in many colors including white, black, brown, red and gray. Poodles often seem like they have a good opinion of themselves because of the way they hold their elegant heads up high.

    Royal Standard Poodle Health Concerns

    • Royal poodles, like many breeds, are subject to health concerns such as complications associated with such parasites as fleas, ticks and tapeworms. In addition to those, large poodles are also susceptible to additional risks. For example, hip dysplasia, renal disease, epilepsy, Addison's disease and skin problems are not uncommon.

    Requirements and Activity

    • Royal standard poodles require exercise and therefore are well-suited to an active family. If poodles don't have a fenced yard to play in, owners should walk them once or twice a day. Poodles also love to swim, so it's a good idea to take them swimming every now and then. If poodles don't get enough exercise, boredom can lead to behavioral problems, and inactivity can lead to weight gain.
