Breed History
-
The Brussels Griffon was originally bred in Brussels, Belgium. Coachmen in the 1800s usually kept a terrier dog around for ratting purposes. The original terriers were know as Griffons d'Ecurie, or "wire-coated stable dogs." The Griffons d'Ecurie was bred with the Pug, then that mix was bred with the King Charles and Ruby types of English Toy Spaniels, giving us the Brussels Griffon. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1910. Old Belgian songs and folk tales mention the Brussels Griffon, referring to them as the "bearded dogs."
Appearance
-
The Brussels Griffon is a member of the Toy Group, and usually weighs 6 to 12 lbs. and stands 7 to 8 inches. The breed standard calls for a thick, short body with a square proportion. The head should be large and round, with a pushed-in snout. The jaw should have an under-bite, and the ears sit high on the head. They can be cropped or left natural. The dog's most important feature is its expression. It is human-like, with expressive eyes. Only two types of coat are officially recognized: rough and smooth. Four colorings are recognized: red, beige, black and tan, and black. White hairs are to be avoided.
Temperament
-
The Brussels Griffon has a very terrier-like personality. They are intelligent, affectionate and charming, and are an ideal companion dog. They get along well with other cats and dogs, and love humans. They are good watchdogs, but may be difficult to housetrain. Their intelligence makes it easy for them to learn tricks. They may become bored if not mentally stimulated, but are ideally suited to live in apartments or homes without yards.
Health
-
Brussels Griffons are prone to several health problems. The most serious problems are hip dysplasia and patella luxation. These are joint problems that often require surgery to repair. Like most pure-breed dogs, Brussels are prone to eye problems and skin allergies. Brussels Griffons do not whelp easily. The dams usually need a cesarean section.
