List of Types of Terriers

Terrier dogs differ in size, shape and color but have one thing in common--they are natural hunters. Terriers have long been used to hunt rodents and vermin. Many terriers are well-spirited and loving, while others can be a tad aggressive. There are over 25 different type of terrier dogs.

  1. Scottish Terrier

    • Scottish terriers are a popular breed of dog and were first brought to the United States in 1883, according to Animal Planet. Popularity of the breed soared after World War II, when President Roosevelt had one as a constant companion. The Scottish terrier has a feisty temperament and can be aggressive toward other dogs. They have a tendency to bark and enjoy digging. Scottish terriers grow to be about 10 inches long and can weigh from 18 to 22 pounds. Their average life span is between 11 and 13 years.

    Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier

    • The soft-coated Wheaten terrier is originally from Ireland and didn't make its way to the United States until 1946. This dog has a very gentle and affectionate temperament, but can be headstrong at times. Soft-coated Wheatens are good with children and other pets. This breed makes a good inside dog, but is also athletic and enjoys going for walks and playing fetch. They grow to be 17 to 19 inches tall and weigh between 30 to 40 pounds. Soft-coated Wheatens has an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years.

    Jack Russell Terrier

    • Jack Russell Terriers have been bred for hunting since the early 1800s. The breed enjoys being outside where they can get exercise and play. They are extremely talented and loyal dogs. Jack Russell Terriers are very aggressive toward other dogs and smaller animals like cats and hamsters due to their hunting instinct. This breed grows to be 10 to 15 inches tall and weighs between 14 and 18 pounds. They have a life expectancy of 15 years or more.

    Yorkshire Terrier

    • Yorkshire Terriers, often called Yorkies, were used in the late nineteenth century to hunt rats, but eventually left the working class and became companion dogs to families of high European status, according to the American Kennel Club. Yorkies are much smaller than other terriers. They grow to be six to seven inches tall and weigh about seven pounds. Yorkies are highly energetic and clever. They are very loving and great with children and like to protect their house. Yorkies don't mind being inside often and do alright without a backyard. They live between 12 to 15 years.
