  1. Origins of Cocker Spaniel

    • The cocker spaniel has been in existence since the 14th century. The English cocker spaniels were brought to the United States, where they were bred. This gave rise to slightly shorter breed of dogs with different body structure and appearance. They became known as American cocker spaniels. As the American breed grew more and more popular, it was just referred to as "cocker spaniel." The breed gained recognition by the American Kennel Club in 1873.

    Ideal Cocker Spaniel Height

    • The ideal height for an adult male is 15 inches at the withers and 14 inches for an adult female, as per The American Spaniel Club Inc. standards. However, even if the height varies by 1/2 inch either way, the dog can qualify. However, if the height of the male is more than 15 1/2 inches and that of the female is more than 14 1/2 inches, the dog is disqualified by the club during shows.

    Weight

    • While the American cocker spaniels weigh anywhere between 15 and 30 lbs, the English breed are heavier. The English male weighs between 28 and 34 lbs, while the female weighs between 26 and 32 lbs.

    Description

    • This dog breed has a broad muzzle, square jaw and straight legs. Its flat silky coat is slightly wavy and comes in different colors, such as solid color, solid color with tan points and black with tan points. Parti-color combination dogs have white with red or white with black colored coat, which can be with or without tan points. Their eyeballs are round and dark in color. Some breeds may have blue eyes. The eyes rims are slightly shaped like an almond. They have very sharp teeth and a feathered chest, legs, abdomen and ears.

    Temperament

    • The temperament of this breed depends on its training. Their intelligence level is average and they are quite obedient if trained well. They are charming, amusing and trustworthy, hence suitable for households. They can also be trained as a gun dog because of their curious, active and bold nature.

Train puppies early on to be social or else they may become shy when they grow up. They are quite cheerful and sweet and constantly wag their tails when they are in a playful mood.

Cocker spaniels are generally friendly towards children if they are trained. They love to be led by their owners and need daily exercise. They are great pets for securing your house, as they do not allow strangers to get in easily. Unlike many other dog breeds, they are quite friendly with other animals.
