Standard Collie and Varieties
-
The standard collie received AKC approval in 1885 and is available in several colors, including sable and white, white, blue merle and tricolor. The rough or smooth-coated collies are considered varieties of the standard collie. The smooth collie has a short, dense coat with a rich undercoat, while the rough collie is the long-haired version of the smooth collie. The body of the collie is extremely proportioned and the size standards of the breed are between 22 and 24 inches measured at the shoulder for females and 24 and 26 inches for males. Female collies weigh between 50 and 65 lbs, while males weigh between 60 and 75 lbs. The collie is an active and responsive dog.
Bearded Collie or Beardie
-
The bearded collie, also known as the beardie, is similar in size to the standard collie, measuring between 20 and 22 inches. The breed was accredited by AKC in 1976. The dog is double-coated and its overcoat is long and harsh. The beardie is available in black, blue, brown and fawn. The bearded collie was bred for herding purposes and it is still being used as such today. As a pet, the bearded collie is an affectionate, intelligent companion.
Border Collie or Scotch Sheepdog
-
Approved by AKC only in 1995, the border collie was initially called the scotch sheep dog. Its coat can be bicolor, tricolor, merle or sable. Solid-colored broder collies are also available. The coat of this type of collie may be rough or smooth. Apart from the color differences, the border collie can be differentiated from the standard collie by its size. The border collie size standard is between 18 and 22 inches. The scotch sheepdog is extremely energetic and is more suitable for families with older children.
Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie
-
Initially known as the Shetland Collie, the Shetland sheepdog or Sheltie, is the smallest of all collies. Adult Shetland sheepdogs measure between 13 and 16 inches at shoulder. The Sheltie is very similar in appearance to the smooth collie, but smaller. The breed was recognized by AKC in 1911. Shelties are double-coated and come in black, blue merle or sable varieties, having various markings of white or tan. Like its cousins, this miniature collie lookalike also requires a lot of exercise and is a loyal and loving family dog.

Types Of Collies
Collies are canines that belong to the herding group. While collies are still used for herding purposes, they are also affectionate and loyal family pets. Even if the rough-coated standard collie is the best-known type and is the first type of collie to receive approval from the American Kennel Club, there are also other varieties of collies.
