What Is a Blue Pomeranian?

Pomeranian dogs are a toy breed that has been recognized by the American Kennel club since 1888. They are known for their distinctive cocky attitude, their copious amounts of hair, and their unique gait pattern. These dogs originally came to the U.S. by way of their popularity in England which was spurred on by Queen Victoria, after she fell in love with one while in Italy. They come in a variety of colors, including blue.
  1. Apearance

    • According to PetPom.com, a blue Pomeranian is the result of a natural genetic dilution of the black coloration. These dogs can appear gray with some darker and lighter tinges of blackish coloration. In general, Pomeranian dogs have a short, but well-built appearance much like a little fox. They have a long, double layered coat and a plumed tail. Both of these require regular grooming to reduce shedding and prevent matting.

    Temperament

    • The coloration of the Pomeranian in no way determines its individual temperament. Pomeranian dogs as a whole are known to be feisty and smart animals that want to be near their owners. Each dog's temperament is as unique as their potential coloration.

    Potential Health Challenges

    • The blue coloration is a standard genetic variation. The coloring variation is not caused by something like a faulty genetic mutation. Due to this fact, blue Pomeranian dogs are no more likely to experience health problems than a Pomeranian of another color. These dogs in general are susceptible to some health issues, but when a blue, or other color dog is bred from a sound line, these issues are much less likely to present themselves.

    Breed Standard

    • The breed standard, set by the American Kennel Club allows for all colors and all patterns to be shown within the Open Classes of competition. However, according to their official competition regulations, open classes at specialty shows may be setup, such that the blue and other distinctive colors or patterns are divided according to their appearance.
